Supporting Sustainability Champions of the Future – a formative learning and development programme for youth

SCAFFOLD aims to help young people – particularly those with fewer opportunities – become Sustainability Champions of the future. Its main objectives are:

• to improve the capacity and skills of youth organisations to work effectively with young people with fewer opportunities;
• support young people with fewer opportunities to become ‘sustainability activators’ in their communities;
• set up community-based Sustainability Co-Design Labs so youth organisations and Activators can collaborate with other stakeholders to solve EU sustainability problems in local ways through action research projects;

These objectives are delivered through three core activities (work packages):

• Programme development, covering developing the competence framework, learning approach, learning content and tools and implementation design for the programme
• Piloting and evaluation of the programme in five different EU countries
• development and implementation of community-based sustainability action research projects

These core activities are supported by 2 ‘horizontal’ work-packages: project management, and dissemination, exploitation and sustainability.

Expected project results include an online Sustainability Activator Foundation course and interactive game, an Immersive Mobility Residential Programme, Evaluation Report and Transferability Toolkit. At least 50 youth workers and 50 young people with fewer opportunities will enrol in the programme. The co-design Labs will produce at least 20 proposals for commmunity-based sustainability projects. Participating youth workers will improve their knowledge and skills in the sustainability field, and in working with ‘hard to reach’ youth. Participating young people become peer role models for sustainable futures.
